Zinc
oxide (ZnO) is the most important chemical related to zinc and has, as its main
application, its use in vehicle tyres and all rubber goods. Other applications
are in ceramic glazing, pigments, animal feed and fertilizers. Many other
zinc-based chemicals are produced for a wide range of applications. Common uses
of zinc in everyday life are for sunblock creams and lotions, for sunburn
treatment and for treatment of certain skin conditions. Zinc is an essential
nutrient, both in agriculture and for the human body. It is, in fact, essential
for human health, playing a major part in disease resistance, wound healing,
reproduction and digestion. The recommended daily intake of zinc is approximately
15 milligrams, depending on age etc. and in some parts of the world zinc
deficiency in humans is a serious problem.
