Sgt. J E Wood (The Chelsea Pensioner)
Sgt. J E Wood. Oil. Size 20X24in. Royal Society of Portrait
Painters 1957. Paris Salon 1957. Royal Society of British
Artists 1958.
This is one of Everel’s
best-known paintings. Sgt. Wood was a
temporary model at the Byam Shaw Art School. The painting was exhibited at a number of
respected art exhibitions and, in the 1957 Royal Society of Portrait Painters
catalogue, it was offered for sale for just £20! Fortunately it was not sold and remained in
the family. Sgt. Wood himself gained
some prominence when, in November 1957, he was the subject of the “This is Your
Life” television show, during which the painting was mentioned, together with
the remarkable fact that Everel had only been
painting in oil for four years when she painted this.
